When you're in some job paths it is hard to disconnect yourself from work since people like to ask for advice. This is something which I experience very often because I'm a social worker. When individuals find this out they like to ask my opinion about what they ought to do about different circumstances, generally involving one of their relatives or neighbors. This can become annoying, but being in a helping profession this is part of the job. Many people don't know where to turn to access services for mental health needs, therefore they find it easier to ask someone they know how to do this.

Most of the affiliates of our church know that I'm a social worker. We had an occurrence that happened during a church gathering which called for my knowledge. We were gathered in our fellowship area for a potluck dinner one Sunday evening. One of the church members was sitting off by themselves. I have spoken with her at other events and she has shared with me that she has problems with anxiety. When I saw her I observed that her skin texture was flushed and she seemed to be having a hard time controlling her breathing. I saw the early symptoms of an anxiety attack. I knew that they would worsen rather rapidly. I quietly asked our minister if he would open his office. I went over to the lady and asked her to come into the minister's office with me. As we were walking towards the office she told me that she was having sharp chest pains. She does not have a history of cardiac disease so I thought that the pains were yet another of the symptoms of an anxiety attack. After we were inside the office I had her concentrate on doing some deep breathing routines with me. I calmly rubbed her hands and continued repeating the directives for the breathing that I was doing with her. She had been heavily sweating so I opened a window, although it was very cold outside. The cold air together with the deep breathing began to calm her. She admitted that she had been very anxious over the past couple of days and that she had not taken her medicine that day. As we talked most of the symptoms of the apprehension assault dissipated.

Our church is very near a hospital and I asked her if she wanted to be checked there to ensure that the chest pains had once been part of the apprehension. She informed me that she was sure they were and that if she had just a couple more moments to compose herself she believed she would be able to leave for home. I told her that no-one in the meeting had seen our departure because they were visiting and having canapes. She agreed to join me in the party with the promise that I would take her home the minute she asked. She ended up staying for most of the evening. She informed me when I drove her home that if she had once been alone she would have called an ambulance due to the fact that she thought the symptoms of the anxiety attack were a heart assault instead. I told her that this was a common error and that she needed to be more aware of how her apprehension impacts her.
