Last month I went to Poland from England. Being an Englishman I obviously am not familiar with the Polish language, so I encountered many issues due to this. I needed someone who could have translated the language, i.e. I wanted a translator Polish to English, but I was helpless to find one.
The difficulties started from day one of my visit. The hotel I was living in interestingly did not have any good English speaking attendants. Only a supervisor was able to talk to me. Right from the door keeper to the waiter, everyone Polish! Frustrated I decided to take a walk around the hotel. While wandering, I stumbled onto a Flower dealer - lovely daffodils and adorable roses filled her flower bouquet.
I asked her about the cost of one flower bunch and the woman simply kept staring at me for 5 minutes. Having already gotten used to the treatment I decided to get a lad who could translate Polish to English. But as I said I searched, but could not find one. The trip therefore had this sort of incidences all the while.
Luckily my work was not of speaking with the Polish people much, so I was able to concentrate on my work. Sometimes such events happened to amuse me, that people are so reluctant to learn the worldwide language. Yes you may say that was true patriotism, but in the search of true patriotism they lost a few foreign currency that could have had some influence on the economy!
But I was additionally ignorant to enter a foreign language country with no knowledge of anything about them. Now that I have returned, I am learning the Polish language - to some extent. Lastly as they say in Polish - pozegnanie. (I used a translation Polish to English software program for the last sentence)
